The American calendar is stuffed with a startling number of holidays no one’s ever heard of. Today, apparently, is National Bow Tie Day. Tomorrow is Lemon Juice Day. And even over this Labor Day Weekend, Saturday is National Trail Mix Day and Sunday is American Chess Day.
Most of these days are useless marketing gimmicks that have only come to public attention with the advent of social media, but there is one relatively unknown holiday with tangible purpose. This September 21st is Museum Day. It’s hosted nationwide by the Smithsonian, and gives Americans an opportunity to visit any of 1,500 museums across the country, absolutely free.
All you have to do is visit Smithsonian.com, pick a museum, enter your email and download your ticket, which is good for you and a guest. The event is run by Smithsonian Magazine in an effort to bring attention to some of the country’s hidden gems exhibitions. Think: the Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum (an ore mill turned movie ranch, on land that’s been settled for 12,000 years) in Apache Junction, Arizona, or the Virginia Quilt Museum (self-explanatory, but just as cool) in Harrisburg, Virginia. Every state is represented, so feel free to peruse here and find a museum that’s closest to you. Alaska has the least (4) and New York has the most (103).
Make sure to check the hours of your chosen museum before you go, and if you’re looking to have a full-on day of learning, have your guest enter his/her email to get additional entry at a nearby museum. Entry is limited to one ticket per email.
