Rocky Mountaineer has operated a luxury rail service in the Canadian Rockies for almost 30 years, ferrying more than two million passengers across four different routes in the stunning regions between Vancouver and Banff.
And all that time, its guests have enjoyed those wonderful views the old-fashioned way: through three-foot individual windows. But that’s about to change for this upcoming season, as the railway will roll out seven new glass-dome, bi-level rail cars, designed by Swiss engineering company Stadler. Passengers will now have the opportunity to watch the peaks and lakes whip by from a fully panoramic perspective, and even drink down some mountain air courtesy of the carriage’s outdoor platform.
Rocky Mountaineer’s season begins this June, and stretches through the end of October. If you’re looking to ride in one of their glass-dome rail cars you’ll want to book either A) First Passage to the West, a two-day journey between Vancouver and Lake Louise/Banff or B) Journey Through the Clouds, a two-day journey between Vancouver and Jasper.
While aboard, expect breakfast and lunch each day from the railway’s redesigned galley kitchens (you’ll handle dinner when you hop off the train each night), heated seats that can spin 180 degrees, and guided storytelling from experts in the area.
