A good piece of party trivia: Dr. Seuss lived for decades in La Jolla, California, in a home overlooking the Pacific. One imagines he was inspired more than a few times by that coastline, equal parts roughhewn and sublime.
For similarly invigorating digs, look no further than La Jolla’s Razor House, a generational achievement by San Diego designer Wallace E. Cunningham, just now back on the market.

Like the man formerly known as Teddy Geisel, the best architects manage to get out of their own way and let the world in, so to speak. And Cunningham has surely achieved that with the Razor.
The more than 10,000-square-foot white-concrete mansion sits on a secluded bluff just south of the Torrey Pines State Park. The design manages to endow almost every single room, terrace and portico with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and the accompanying vistas. Squint hard enough and you might see Hawaii.
As for what’s inside all those windows? Plenty. The property includes a library, billiards room, custom bar, screening room with an 85” TV, two kitchens, an infinity pool and two master suites. There’s walnut flooring and stone countertops throughout, along with several outdoor spaces in fascinating geometric tiers and shapes … one of which includes a sound system and fire pit.
