History, they say, repeats itself.
That is certainly true when it comes to winning Best in Show at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, and one Italian carmaker couldn’t be more contento about it.
Rewind back to 2014, when a 1956 Maserati 450 S upstaged the competition. ‘Twas black as night. Elegant and powerful. One of only nine made. Which was enough to woo the judges for top honors.
This year the jury selected a covetous 1954 Maserati A6 GCS that features a coachbuilt body that, back in 1952, designer Aldo Brovarone originally made for Cisitalia. When the Italian automaker went belly up, Brovarone pitched the design to Pininfarina and it ended up on a Maserati-built chassis
This 190 HP, six-cylinder mode was bought by Count Alberto Magi Diligenti, who also happens to have the most Count-like name in history.
Despite being used in a number of races, including the 1955 Mille Miglia, the 2016 Villa d’Este winner is said to be the finest of the only four GCS models ever built.
While there’s little doubt the jury was impressed with the A6’s backstory, we’re thinking it’s red paintjob didn’t hurt either, given how a certain crimson concept car also turned heads this year.
