Stress sucks. Though it’s impossible to eliminate, there are simple steps everyone can take to diminish stress’s impact on their lives.

Bestselling author Greg McKeown breaks down some of the best ways to minimize stress for Harvard Business Review. Below are a few of his tips.

Relaxation

Start with three deep breaths each time you sit down at your desk, starting a habit that can grow into a few minutes daily. This helps with staying in the moment, being patient, and remaining calm, research says.

Self-reflection

Each time a nagging thought pops up, stop for a moment to assess it’s accuracy. If there’s a shred of doubt, just let it go. McKeown says: “There is power in acknowledging rather than repressing negative thoughts.” Confronting them helps with resolution.

Focus

Focus on the current activity exclusively—no multi-tasking. Eating dinner? Savor that food. Supporting this idea, a study found that workers who didn’t check their email during the day had lower stress levels.
