“Keep (My City) Weird.”
You’ve seen the T-shirts.
Now you’ve got a chance to prove it.
Even you, Milwaukee.
When and how: Obscura Day, a series of nation- and worldwide tours exploring assorted wacky wunderkammers in a city near you on May 30th, tickets on sale now.
Conceived by oddball travel compendium Atlas Obscura, OD spotlights 150 events in 39 different states and 20 countries, all designed for the unusually inquisitive.
It is, to quote them, “The most interesting day in the world.”
These are no ordinary walking tours.
These are deep dives into off-limits cemeteries and ruins, explorations of gangster-haunted catacombs, visits with century-old mechanical clowns and trips to iconic landmarks — like the first 300 miles of Route 66.
A few we liked:
- Peruse the 4.5-million-volt tandem particle accelerator at Edwards Accelerator Laboratory in Ohio
- Explore sculptor Allen Christian’s “House of Balls,” a funhouse of found art and participatory sculpture in Minnesota
- The World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Versions of the World’s Largest Things (self-explanatory)
Plus, see where Jello got its start.
And learn falconry.
When you’re done, have a drink. In Milwaukee, that means visiting a haunted bar for a night called “Shaker’s Cigar Bar and the Whoring ‘20s.”
Stay weird, Milwaukee.
