Used to be tailored shoes were the express domain of cane-twirling bon vivants and guys on a first-name basis with their podiatrist.
But thanks to 3D printing, Adidas wants to bring bespoke kicks to the masses.
The footwear giant unveiled prototypes this week for a new sneaker: running shoes featuring a fully breathable woven upper and 3D-printed midsole that can be a made-to-measure using a carbon copy of an athlete’s footprint. Innovative, yes, but just a primer for the more grandiose vision Adidas has for Futurecraft 3D, a program that will invite athletes to come into any store, run on a treadmill and instantly get a fully custom 3D-printed shoe on-site.
The announcement comes soon after Nike COO Erik Sprunk discussed the possibility of one day printing sneakers in the privacy of your own home.
