Retired NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz has some ideas on how to fix those rules that we all hate. Like the catch rule, shown in prime example during the Patriots/Steelers game this weekend. Schwartz writes in SB Nation that the catch rule is “awful and needlessly complicates the game.” But if the NFL admits the rule is too complicated, they look bad, even though the rule is making the game worse. However, Schwartz writes that the worst rule in football is the touchback. Schwartz has three suggestions: the ball comes back to the original line of scrimmage but the offense loses a down; or the offense keeps the ball at the spot of the fumble; or the defense gets the ball at the spot of the fumble. Finally, Schwartz writes that he hates pass interference calls when there’s no chance for a catch but doesn’t necessarily see a clear solution.
