The Giants are most likely choosing a rocket scientist as their next head coach. The New York Daily News is reporting that all signs are pointing to Matt Patricia, who is currently the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator, and who also has a degree in aeronautical engineering. The Giants best seasons were when Bill Parcells, a coach with defense as his background, was head coach and Bill Belichick was defensive coordinator. They went on to win the franchise’s first two Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990. But since Parcells, the Giants have hired five head coaches with backgrounds in offense and have not done as well. The Daily News writes that “great defense defines the Giants at their peak.” Patricia, 43, could be a good fit and could bring an offensive coordinator to address the needs of a young quarterback. He is not a done deal to the Detroit Lions as several reports had claimed and there are indications that he prefers the Giants to the Lions. He would not be able to “make an agreement to execute a contract” until the Patriots postseason ends.
