Monday night’s Spurs-Grizzlies game broke a major record for the NBA’s official Instagram account.
A clip of Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant hitting a buzzer-beater to end the second quarter received 42.1 million Instagram video views, the official Twitter account for NBA Communications revealed on Wednesday, making it the most-viewed NBA Instagram video ever.
Morant dropped a career-high 52 points in a win over the San Antonio Spurs, and the social media engagement numbers prove the 22-year-old had a fire performance.
Content of Morant from Monday’s game amassed over 80 million views across the NBA’s social accounts, part of the 385 million views he’s received across NBA social assets since the beginning of the season — earning him the title as the third-most viewed player behind Steph Curry and LeBron James.
The social media stats are as impressive as another set of stats.
So far this season, the 2020 Rookie of the Year is averaging 27.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game while shooting 49.6 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from the 3-point range. Not to mention, he’s simply exciting to watch. Between hitting buzzer-beaters and dunking on the Celtics, it’s no surprise videos of Morant are going viral every other day.
And he’s even got the support of Sixers legend Allen Iverson who posted a photo of Morant’s jersey draped over the MVP trophy earlier this week. Another NBA player known for his entertaining game and iconic moments you can’t help but watch over and over again.
