Raggedy Sandy

Last week, in the waterlogged aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, we recommended the best ways to volunteer and help NYC recover. Then we went to the Rockaways to lend a hand. What we learned: manpower is needed just as much as donations are.

So this week, with a nor’easter bearing down, we’re putting some sweat equity into the hardest-hit neighborhoods — and we’d like you to join us. Here’s how to help.

Red Hook Initiative (Red Hook)

This super-organized community group is helping citizens and local businesses, many of whom still lack power. Their homepage, Facebook, and Twitter are constantly updated with projects, from hauling hot meals up apartment stairs to pumping out flooded homes. Join and lend a hand, or preferably, both hands.

SandyBaggers (Staten Island)

Launched less than a week ago but already making a huge impact, this grassroots group organizes volunteers into 4-8 person squads to tackle smaller projects, especially on Staten Island. Meet-ups are organized via their Facebook page, so check in, grab a ride, and get involved.

Rockaway Relief (The Rockaways)

Various organizations use this Facebook page to reveal projects requiring volunteers. Go here to find out which items are truly needed, learn about specific places where you can help, and discover ways to spread the word.
