Is it bizarre that you can now buy bottled iceberg water for $60 a bottle? Yes. Is it a sign that we are harming the earth? Yes. Is it delicious? Probably.
We know that the oceans are in fact rising and that icebergs are melting and it’s because the earth is getting warmer. That’s science. Since the genie isn’t going back in the bottle, one intrepid company figured, “Hell, we might as well use the water, if not for farming or quenching those without access to clean drinking water, then at least for those poor souls in dire need of one more extravagance.” That’s capitalism.
Svalbardi Polar Iceberg Water, as it’s called, is currently being bottled by a Norwegian-American Wall Street Banker (naturally). He and his crew charter an icebreaking boat up to the icebergs in Kongsfjorden, 620 miles from the North Pole, chip off about 15 tons of berg, melt it, filter it and then UV blast it to maintain the natural taste. There are no pollutants in it, and it’s mineral free.
They’ve got 13,000 bottles for what they’re calling a “limited run.”
Limited, indeed.
