If we are to question the legitimacy of a clothing company’s commitment to the environment, the last brand on that very long list would be Patagonia. Remember, this is the brand that donated 100% of its Black Friday sales to grassroots environmental organizations; the company with a keen eye on our global food system; the label that can claim on its tags 100% recycled fabric.
So it should be no surprise then the outdoor brand’s announcement of plans to expand its successful Worn Wear program to include an online marketplace for returned and repaired Patagonia gear.
The program’s mission: reduce, reuse, recycle. It’s a natural evolution for a division that hit the road last year on a cross-country tour, stopping at retail locations to offer free repairs and sell refurbished Patagonia items along the way. That tour has translated to a handy Worn Wear website, where customers can read up on personal stories and find repair and care guides on how to bring their time-worn gear back to life.
With the new program, Patagonia fans will be able to bring their garments into retail stores. In turn, Patagonia will reimburse the good deed with store credits equal to half the resale of the used garments, GearJunkie reports.
Expect the online component to roll out by this summer. You’ll wanna keep your eye on Patagonia for updates.
Until then, do your part and put that gear to the test. It’s a win-win.
