Never know when you’re gonna need a screwdriver.
Or a glass breaker. Or a bottle opener. Or a wrench … you get it.
And since you can’t carry a toolbox in your pocket, might as well keep one on your wrist.
Enter the Leatherman Tread Tempo. A sequel to their 2015 Tread — the first wearable multitool — the Tempo is more functional and less bulky than its predecessor, and now comes with a nearly indestructible timepiece.
The original Tread was inspired by Leatherman CEO Ben Rivera’s failed family trip to Disneyland — he wasn’t able to enter the park with his bladed multitool. Wanting to create something that he could travel with safely, he devised the first wearable EDC.
Tempo, as the Leatherman team told us during a recent visit, came about when fans of the Tread who wore watches and were hesitant to give up real estate on their wrist.
First impressions? This is a strong statement, but not as bulky as the original Tempo. “You could probably hang from the ceiling with this,” as one Leatherman rep noted — but the timepiece itself is designed to be a bit isolated, so you’re not damaging the watch when you’re using the tools.
You can adjust the clasp down to 1/8 of an inch, so it’s a nice solid fit on your wrist.
As for the timepiece component: It’s a Swiss movement watch with a sapphire crystal, glow-in-the-dark hour markers and hands (on the stainless steel version) and water-resistant down to 200m.
The tools: Multiple screwdrivers and box wrenches, as well as a file, strap cutter and glass breaker. And a bottle opener that you can use without the Tempo ever leaving your wrist — a nice party trick, for sure. And it’s all TSA compliant.
Available in black or stainless steel, the Tempo comes with a five-year battery warranty, two-year movement warranty and 25-year band warranty. Available now for about $450, and probably something your dad will covet for the holidays (as will you).
Also new: the LT, a new take on the Tread that’s 20% narrower and 10% lighter, albeit sans the timepiece.
