In October, Steve McQueen’s 1968 classic Bullitt will celebrate its 50 birthday. And if reports from Automotive News are correct, the cult classic flick will get an early birthday present at the Detroit auto show next week.
Rumors swirling around muscle car fan circles indicate Ford is planning to unleash a special edition, high-performance 2018 Mustang Bullitt GT in Detroit that will likely have the same black wheels and dark green paint as McQueen’s iconic 390
Details are sparse, but expect a very limited production run.
But wait, there’s more. According to a Barrett-Jackson listing about their upcoming auction in Scottsdale on January 19th, a “special new Ford Mustang” will be crossing the block with no reserve. As you can see, the shadowy picture above looks awfully familiar.
The listing doesn’t include any more information about Lot #3006 except that Ford will be donating 100% of proceeds to the Boys Republic, a charity that runs a school in California for troubled youth that Steve McQueen attended in the 1940s and then later became chairman of for a few years in the ‘60s and ‘70s.
Based on all that, we’re feeling pretty bullish that we’ll be seeing a 2018 Bullitt next week.
