Since the release of their earliest albums 20 years ago, Belle and Sebastian have gradually increased the scope of their music from quirky indie-pop to something far grander in scale. The last decade has seen, among other things, the release of frontman Stuart Murdoch’s directorial debut, the musical God Help the Girl, in 2014.
Next up for the band? A soundtrack for the forthcoming film Days of the Bagnold Summer, due out on September 13. It’s comprised of 11 new songs, along with reworked versions of a pair of older numbers, included at the request of filmmaker Simon Byrd.
Single “Sister Buddha” is a gloriously shimmering dose of glam-rock, a subtly anthemic change of pace for the band. The video features what appears to be a Man Ray allusion, as well as a nod to cult post-punk band Dolly Mixture.
Days of the Bagnold Summer is based on the graphic novel by Joff Winterhart. The soundtrack will be released on September 13 via Matador Records; the film will be released in 2020.
