When John Prine died in April, it prompted many musicians and writers to look back on his influence and explore his long and storied career. Now, an online tribute to Prine will bring some of those figures together — at least virtually — to pay tribute to the acclaimed singer-songwriter.
At Rolling Stone, Joseph Hudak has more details about the event. Titled Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine, the event will take place on Thursday, June 11 on YouTube, Twitch and Facebook. And the lineup is decidedly impressive:
Along with [Jason] Isbell, [Brandi] Carlile, [Eric] Church, [Kacey] Musgraves, and [Bill] Murray, the lineup includes: Courtney Marie Andrews, Dan Auerbach, Kevin Bacon, Brené Brown, producer Dave Cobb, Stephen Colbert, Peter Cooper, Iris DeMent, John Dickerson, Mitchell Drosin, David Ferguson, Vince Gill, Jeremy Ivey, Jim James, Pat McLaughlin, Margo Price, Jack Prine, Tommy Prine, Bonnie Raitt, the Secret Sisters, Kyra Sedgwick, Amanda Shires, Sturgill Simpson, Todd Snider, Billy Bob Thornton, Kurt Vile, Kelsey Waldon, Sara Watkins, Jody Whelan, John Paul White, and Rita Wilson. Prine’s band of Kenneth Blevins, David Jacques, Fats Kaplin, and Jason Wilber is also involved.
Proceeds from the event will benefit a trio of nonprofit organizations: the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Make the Road New York and Alive Hospice.
The quality of the lineup, which spans genres and generations, is indicative of Prine’s reach and influence. For those who love his music, it should be a night to remember.
