The allure of a good multi-tool isn’t just about its versatility (though, to be clear, that is top of the pile). It is also about the owner’s desire to show off that versatility, as early and often as possible.
For example: I don’t need to use my Leatherman to pop off a beer cap, or slice open a package, or tighten the screws on my admittedly shoddy IKEA dresser. I have dedicated tools for all those things, and typically closer at hand than my Leatherman. And yet, I tend to fetch my Leatherman anyway, if for no better reason than to remind myself and anyone else in the room how f*cking nifty and clever it is, just like the man smart enough to be using it.
And do you know what will make that Leatherman still more show-off-able? Customizing it with the graphic or pattern of your choice, which you can now do thanks to Leatherman’s new customization shop, launched last month. The tool allows you select from a number of presets or upload your own custom artwork, which are then laser-engraved into the handle of your tool. You can also engrave the monogram/cognomen of your choosing alongside it.
The customization (which will run you somewhere between $7 and $17) is currently available for four Leatherman models: the Wingman (14 tools), Wave+ (18 tools), Charge+ (19 tools) and Surge (21 tools). Our money’s on the Wave+, an updated version of Wirecutter’s pick for the best multi-tool in the game that incorporates removable, replaceable 154cm … uh … wirecutters. To boot, the Wave+ and Charge+ are currently marked down 20% (to $80 and $112, respectively), which means now is the time to buy.
Those menial household tasks are not going to take care of themselves.
