Everyone has their tried-and-true “local.”

But how’d you like to try the best neighborhood haunt in Hong Kong or Paris … without busting out the passport? Enter Gabriel Stulman and Resy’s The Neighborhood series, which will bring some of the world’s best restaurants to Simon & The Whale for one night only.

From San Francisco’s Delfina to Tel Aviv’s Dok, one guest chef will visit each month from now until December (browse the full schedule here). Next up in the series is Hong Kong’s Chicken and Charcoal on April 25th. In the meantime, we tapped Stulman for his favorite “neighborhood spots” in six NYC neighborhoods …

Upper West Side:Barney Greengrass. It’s called ‘The Sturgeon King’ for a reason. A love letter to Jewish Appetizing cuisine and an institution of the UWS. Lox, whitefish, bagels, kugel — you name it. Can’t go wrong here.”

Lower East Side:Katz’s. This place has my heart in so many ways. It is a piece of history of New York. It is a piece of Jewish culture. And it’s perfection between two slices of bread. This was one of the first spots I knew about when I moved to New York and it’s still one of my favorites.”

East Village:Hearth. This place is personal to me. It was one of my first jobs when I moved to NYC back in 2003. Chef/Owner Marco Canora is one of the most talented chefs in the city and gnocchi here are the lightest versions of gnocchi anywhere in the city. They are like parmesan and pepper pillows.”

West Village:Joseph Leonard. Albeit biased, this is my version of a perfect neighborhood restaurant. It’s like Cheers in there. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night — you name it. It’s always there for you. Always delicious and always fun. AND it turns 10 years old, with a new renovation and menu … in a week!”

Soho:Balthazar a.k.a.“The Balth.” This is my hero. This is inspiration. Keith McNally literally brought Paris to New York with this restaurant. An institution to the neighborhood. This defines ‘classic’ with all my favorite standbys: steak frites, rillette, pate, frissee aux Lardons, all in a huge bustling brasserie. Drink martinis and eat oysters, then drink Bordeaux and eat roast chicken or steak. Always a WIN!”

Williamsburg, Brooklyn:Diner. Andrew Tarlow created this place over 20 years ago and it defines Williamsburg. It is at the forefront of farm-to-table, the menu changes daily and they write what they’re offering directly on your placemat. A burger of reputation for nearly two decades and all done in a refurbished old school diner complete with the booths, the stools and the counter. Love this joint.”
