Gary Oldman is starring as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, a role that is already generating him best actor Oscar talk, reports The New York Times.
The film will be released Nov. 22, but a new trailer shows clips of King George VI, played by Ben Mendelsohn. It also makes a prominent mention of the Battle of Dunkirk, which not only represents a turning point in World War II, but is the focus of an awards contender, Dunkirk, by Christoper Nolan.
The film focuses on “the week that saved the world” and Churchill’s defiance towards foreign secretary, Lord Halifax. During WWII, instead of waiting to see if good terms existed, Churchill persuaded his colleagues to unify and to fight on alone.
Oldman has only been nominated for one Academy Award, reports the Times, for the 2011 version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. But based on this trailer, he may also be considered this time around.
