The electrification of Aston Martin has been simmering for some time, with its new facility in St Athan, Wales, breaking ground in 2016 and the mention of an EV sedan to follow in 2017. Then, just last month, it was reported that James Bond would drive one.
We’re still not sure if he will, but the rest of the world definitely can. Today, the marque officially unveiled its first all-electric, production-ready car the Rapide E. Unlike many other recently announced EVs, it’s immediately available to order.
The specs of the Rapide E, an electric version of the brand’s Rapide sedan, are pretty much the same as when it was announced back in September 2018. “From its 800-volt battery system, its twin, rear-mounted motors produce a claimed 610 PS (602 horsepower) and 950 Nm of torque (701 lb.-ft.),” writes Jalopnik.
The 200-plus-mile range isn’t anything to write home about, especially in comparison to Tesla which touts 295 miles or above on its entire range. But the performance capabilities (sub-four-second 0 to 60 MPH time) and fast charging (up to 310 miles per hour) make up for that. Plus, we are talking about Aston Martin here. The design lives up to the legacy from the aerodynamic body to the forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires.
Pricing is only available upon application, but Jalopnik estimates it clocks in at $255K. Yes, that’s extreme, but as the Rapide E is the first car from Aston Martin’s zero-emission luxury brand Lagonda, the marque is creating hype by limiting production to 155 units.
More EVs will follow, but if you want the first EV Bond will (probably) drive, you’ll have to shell out.
