While the auto industry as a whole skids its way through the fallout from COVID-19, some are choosing to forego new releases (Ford’s new Bronco was supposed to be public by now, but it’s hopefully coming soon) while others are forging ahead. Lamborghini restarted production on May 4, and while they’re taking things slow and steady at the factory with new safety measures in place, they’re not slowing down on unveilings.
On Thursday, the Italian marque announced the new Huracán EVO Rear-Wheel Drive Spyder, adding a fourth model to the storied V10-powered Huracán line. Like the AWD Spyder before it, this one’s also topless, but thankfully with a starting price a full $60K less.
For those actually interested in picking up one of these for warm-weather driving (Lamborghini says the first deliveries will be available this summer), the fact that you can’t safely go out and see one in person is a gigantic bummer. But Lamborghini has come through in the clutch on this point, too.
In lieu of an extravagant launch event, Lamborghini has made the Huracán EVO RWD Spyder available to the public through augmented reality, which they’re calling a first for any automaker.
What do they mean by augmented reality? First, you’ll need to get an iPhone or iPad and head to the vehicle page here or scan the QR code. Then experience the majesty of the electric blue supercar from the comfort of your own garage or, like me, kitchen table:
Now that 5-year-old who stole his mom’s car can actually get his own Lamborghini!
In terms of specs, this new RWD Huracán keeps the same naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine as the previous models, which puts out the same 610 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque; but the top marks vary a little, with a 0 to 62 MPH time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed just above 200 MPH.
If money is your main barrier, this comes in second in the Huracán line at a starting price of $229,428, with the EVO RWD Coupe being the only more affordable model. But really, you’re going to want the convertible soft top.
