Auction: A Replica of Marty's Truck From "Back to the Future"

You can’t mention Back to the Future without conjuring an image of a time-traveling DeLorean, but it’s actually not the best vehicle in the movie. Sure, we all wanted one of the stainless-steel sports cars with the gullwing doors after we first watched Marty McFly rip a hole in the space-time continuum at 88 mph, but in real life DeLoreans are a pain to drive.

On the other hand, the 1985 Toyota Xtra Cab SR5 pickup (also known as the Hilux) drives like a dream. At least, the super clean model that’s up for auction at Mecum’s Kansas City sale taking place December 2-4 sure looks like it does. This is the same model truck that Marty covets at the beginning of the movie and finds in his garage at the end (it also makes appearances in the sequels), one that has been customized to look like its cinematic inspiration.

Not only does this truck have all the elements you’d hope for in a spot-on replica — including the roll bar, front and back Smittybilt bumpers, KC lights and gray interior — there are a few pieces of memorabilia thrown in just for fun. As the listing notes, the winning bidder will also receive a hoverboard, pair of “self-lacing shoes,” copy of Grays Sports Almanac, framed poster and 1/10th scale remote-controlled model of the truck.

If you’re more concerned about how the truck handles than how it looks, take comfort knowing this model has a five-speed manual transmission. Silodrome has some additional details about the specifics of this 1985 model year.

“The 1985 Toyota SR-5 is now considered one of the most collectible pick ups from the Japanese marque as it was the last year to have the live axle front and back, and the first year to have the desirable EFI engine option,” Ben Branch writes at the site. “Later trucks for the USA market would all have independent front suspension for better road handling, combined with a live axle rear.”

While there’s no price listed for this truck, be aware that the hammer price will likely be high enough to make Doc Brown yell, “Great Scott!” A similar replica sold through Mecum in October for — no joke — $110,000.
