When it comes to American television, few have had the careers of Henry Winkler. From his role as The Fonz on Happy Days to his critically acclaimed supporting role on Barry, Winkler has made his mark on a host of acclaimed and beloved shows. Winkler can do drama just as easily as stylized screwball (see also: his role on Arrested Development).
He also has a reputation as one of the nicest people in the film and television world. And in a recent interview with The Tonight Show‘s Jimmy Fallon, Winkler demonstrated that charm — both when it came to discussing his own and and promoting his daughter’s nonprofit group.
Winkler shared some stories from his long career, including that of an iconic piece of his Happy Days costume. “I’m a hoarder,” Winkler told Fallon — particularly when it comes to jackets. And it turns out his sartorial inclinations have served him well over the years — one of the stories he recounted to Fallon has a fantastic payoff.
Also discussed: Winkler’s magnificent quarantine beard, which he’s hoping his Barry co-star Bill Hader lets him keep for that show’s third season. Winkler won his first Emmy in 2018 for his performance on the show as Gene Cousineau.
Winkler sounded particular engaged when he spoke about This Is About Humanity, a nonprofit that helps families separated at the US/Mexico border. Winkler’s daughter Zoe is one of the group’s co-founders, and he spoke enthusiastically about the work they’ve been doing since 2018.
It’s an informative and charming interview all around, bolstered by the clear enthusiasm both men have for their conversation.
