Squid Game became a worldwide hit earlier this fall due largely to its powerful message about class and vast wealth disparity in South Korea. Most people who saw the show came away horrified by the notion that 456 competitors would willingly sign up to fight to the death for a slim shot at winning some cash. But others, like Chrissy Teigen, who reportedly threw a lavish, star-studded Squid Game-themed party at her home recently, appear to have missed the concept.
“where do I even begin!! what an absolutely epic night,” Teigen wrote on Instagram. “my dream came true of watching my friends fight to the death! dunk tank, musical chairs, hide and seek followed by a very riveting final game of pin the tail on the donkey. @wifeoftheparty you truly are the best and have THE BEST team ever. Thank you thank you thank you!! More pics to come!!”
Teigen dressed up as the infamous “Red Light, Green Light” robot from the series’ first deadly game, in which nearly half of the contestants were gunned down, while her husband John Legend donned a golden animal mask and a robe similar to the wealthy VIPs who placed bets on the fates of the players. Guests at the party competed in the childhood games, and according to People, the winner was awarded “a flight to Napa and dinner for two at French Laundry.”
Teigen even decorated her home to reflect some of the show’s set-pieces, including “the maze staircase, bunk beds, and oversized money-stuffed piggy bank,” and had servers at the party dressed up in pink magenta jumpsuits and black masks to look like the murderous guards responsible for executing the losers of each game on the show. (How hilarious to force your hired help to dress up as executioners tasked with slaughtering the poor while they pass out drinks!)
It’s frankly insane that Teigen seemingly has no understanding of how tone-deaf this whole affair is. How is it possible that she watched a show about the horrors of poverty and the ways in which the wealthy exploit the working class and came away with … the idea to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on a party for all her millionaire friends where they dress up as poor people and compete to win a trip to Napa?!
Actress Shay Mitchell, who reportedly has a net worth between $6 million and $8 million, posted a picture of herself at the party dressed as one of the competitors, fighting over a piggybank. You know, just the way those pathetic poors on show had to fight to the death for a 1-in-456 chance at winning money so they could do things like feed their families and pay their bills! How fun!
