Hamilton and Mary Poppins star Lin-Manuel Miranda is saving a historic New York City book shop from closing down forever.
According to The Wrap, Miranda is teaming up with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) to keep The Drama Book Shop, an independent bookstore which opened in 2001, from shutting down.
This past year the store’s rent was increased from $18,000 per month, nearly doubling, to $30,000. The store was sure to close until the famous Broadway actor got involved, offering to search for a long-term solution for the beloved bookstore.
“The Drama Book Shop is beloved by New York City’s theatre community, and we simply could not stand by and watch a uniquely New York independent bookstore disappear,” Julie Menin, Media and Entertainment Commissioner, said in a statement. “We are delighted to be playing a part in assuring this vital cultural resource can remain in midtown, for New Yorkers and tourists from all over the world to enjoy, and we know it will be in extremely capable hands.”
MOME and the new owners will announce the new location and opening date later this year.
