Neil Young’s 10-disc set Archives Volume 2: 1972-1976 isn’t due to be released until next month, but this week we got an early taste of it as the musician shared “Come Along and Say You Will,” a previously unreleased track from 1972.
The song was recorded at Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch on Dec. 15, 1972, and it features his old backing band The Stray Gators — drummer Kenny Buttrey, bassist Tim Drummond, and pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith — who also backed him on 1972’s Harvest and 1973’s Time Fades Away. That makes it a must-listen for fans of Young’s early ’70s golden era.
“Come along and say you will / be the one to change the meaning / of the writing on the wall,” Young sings on the track, adding, “I’ll never understand / why walk around a sinner / with a nail through your hand.”
The Archives Volume 2: 1972-1976 box set will be released on Nov. 20.
