Some rock stars of a certain age make cringeworthy decisions when it comes to the positions they’ve embraced over the years, effectively pouring gasoline on their legacy and then lighting it aflame. On the flip side of the proverbial coin, there’s Dee Snider, best known for his work with Twisted Sister, who recently took to Twitter to offer solidarity with Ukraine and make it very clear where he does and does not want to see his music used in a political context. It was an amazing sight to behold.
On Saturday, Snider alluded to reports of “Ukrainians using ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ as their battlecry.” Turns out Snider is wholeheartedly in favor of this. He went on to cite his own familial connections to Ukraine before signing off with a profane hashtag directed at Russia.
His choice of hashtags led to a brief exchange with a Russian woman who mentioned that she’d been protesting against the war. Snider opted to change his chosen hashtag to one that specifically targeted Russian leader Vladimir Putin. “[C]hange will come from the young and young at heart,” Snider wrote. “It’s never easy.”
Apparently Snider received some frustrated comments from people angry that he hadn’t endorsed “We’re Not Gonna Take It” for anti-mask protests. Snider then made his feelings on the subject absolutely clear.
“[O]ne use is for a righteous battle against oppression; the other is a infantile feet stomping against an inconvenience,” Snider wrote. Pro tip: do not annoy Dee Snider; if you do, it’s entirely possible that he’ll publicly castigate you and then write an anthemic song about it.
