How do you hold a massive film festival when large public events can’t really happen? It’s a dilemma that many organizations are facing; for a number of them, the answer involves moving things online. Amazon Prime is streaming movies that would have otherwise played at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, for instance. And it’s not just film festivals that are following this model — other cultural events like the Wordplay literary festival also shifted to an online model this year.
A new collaboration between YouTube and Tribeca Enterprises offers a different spin on things — namely, a brand-new film festival that will take place online. As you might guess, the parent company behind the Tribeca Film Festival has a pretty good sense of how to put a high-profile film event together.
TechCrunch’s Anthony Ha has more information on the new festival, dubbed We Are One: A Global Film Festival. It’s set to last for 10 days, and will kick off on May 29. And Tribeca isn’t the only film festival involved; also contributing to the programming will be cinematic heavyweights like the Cannes Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival.
According to the TechCrunch article, We Are One will act as a benefit event, focusing on “the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, as well as local relief providers.” There’s no information yet on what films will take part. Still, the organizations involve suggest this will delight cinephiles while also raising money for a good cause. That’s an excellent combination if ever there was one.
