Elizabeth Banks Is Making a Movie Called "Cocaine Bear"

We can only imagine what the elevator pitch for this one was like: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Elizabeth Banks is set to direct a movie called Cocaine Bear about, you guessed it, a bear that accidentally does a bunch of cocaine.

The horror-comedy is based on a real-life incident from 1985 in which a 175-pound black bear in Kentucky consumed the contents of a duffel bag that was dropped from an airplane by drug smuggler Andrew Thornton and filled with over 70 pounds of cocaine. That’s a lot of blow, and as you might have expected, the bear was later found dead of an apparent overdose, as any being who ingested 70 pounds of coke in one sitting surely would be.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the exact plot details of the film are “being kept under wraps,” but given that the bear died, we’re guessing it has more to do with the fallout from 70 pounds of cocaine going missing than it does with a coked-out beast going on a rampage. We’ll have to wait and see, though; the movie is slated to begin filming this summer.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce the project, which is based on a spec script by Jimmy Warden. It won’t be the first time Banks has stepped behind the camera; she previously directed Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot as well as Pitch Perfect 2.
