On Wednesday (Jan. 22), Focus Features announced that Irresistible, a new movie written and directed by former Daily Show host Jon Stewart, is slated to hit theaters May 29 of this year, just as the 2020 election season starts to ramp up.
The movie is a political satire that follows a Democratic strategist (played by Steve Carell) who “sees political potential in a retired, Wisconsin-based Marine colonel (Chris Cooper) after the colonel stands up for the town’s undocumented workers and goes viral.” Rose Byrne also stars as a Republican strategist named Faith. Irresistible also features Mackenzie Davis, Topher Grace, Debra Messing and Natasha Lyonne.
This will be Stewart’s second film. In 2014, he directed Rosewater, which starred Gael Garcia Bernal as Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was detained and tortured in Iran. As Vanity Fair notes, “Irresistible’s release date means Stewart will be out on the promo cycle this spring — a publicity blitz perfectly timed to the whirligig presidential race. Which may mean this is as close as we’re gonna get to having the Daily Show staple back in the political circus.”
Stewart left the Daily Show and was replaced by host Trevor Noah back in 2015.
