Two time Oscar-winner Tom Hanks plays famed newspaper editor Ben Bradlee in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming drama The Post. He sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the man he plays — who he also knew in real life — and the issues the film raises. Hanks also said that he would refuse to go to the White House for a screening of the movie, because at some point, “we have to decide when we take to the ramparts.” He said things are bad right now, and this is a moment where, “in some ways, our personal choices are going to have to reflect our opinions. We have to start voting, actually, before the election.” When Hanks first read the script for The Post, he said he saw a lot of parallels to 2017. According to Hanks, director Steven Spielberg said, “The truth is making a comeback.”
Hanks had also known Ben Bradlee and met Katherine Graham (the day before she died in fact). Hanks said he and Streep (who plays Graham in the movie), spent one day at The Washington Post before they started shooting.
