The mysterious British artist Banksy has erected another mural — this time it’s in downtown Manhattan, and it protests the imprisonment of Turkish artist Zehra Doğan, the New York Times is reporting.
“I really feel for her. I’ve painted things much more worthy of a custodial sentence,” Banksy reportedly told the Times in a statement.
Jailed for painting Turkish flags on war-torn buildings in a Kurdish town called Nusaybin, Doğan was sentenced to nearly three years in prison for her work, which you can see in the Instagram post below.
“I was given two years and 10 months [jail time] only because I painted Turkish flags on destroyed buildings. However, they [Turkish government] caused this. I only painted it,” Doğan reportedly wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
Banksy reportedly created the mural with Borf, a graffiti artist who also has spent time in jail for his work.
