Robert O’Hara is the author of rude, hilarious satires, including Bootycand and Barbecue. His next venture is a satirical show called Mankind, which will open on Jan. 8 at Playwrights Horizons. It is set about 100 years in the future, and women are extinct and men are now able to reproduce. The play looks at desire, power, pregnancy and religion. In an interview with The New York Times, O’Hara discussed writing the play and working as a black theater artist. In the interview, O’Hara thinks a world without women would be a “drastic, drastic reduction in the quality of life.” In the play, abortion is still illegal, and when asked why, O’Hara responded, “Because I think men are stupid.” His motto for his work is “Everyone is welcome, no one is safe.” He wants the “experience for the audience to be a sort of speeding train that gets completely and totally out of hand.”
