Gregg Delman did not know much about ballet when he saw dancer Misty Copeland in a magazine in 2011. But he told CNN that the minute he saw her, he knew he had to work with her, and so he called her agents to arrange a photoshoot. They have been collaborating ever since. Copeland went on to make history in 2015, becoming the first female black principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre.

Delman put together his favorite photos from the first three years of their relationship for his debut book Misty Copeland.

The photos are incredibly authentic, with Copeland wearing her own clothes, subtle makeup and hair styled by herself, writes CNN. She poses, stretches, and dances for the camera. Copeland writes in the book’s forward that Delman is a “gift to work with.”
