As the Daily Mail points out, Osama bin Laden’s niece is currently touring the UK as a member of the punk trio Deep Tan, where she’s joined by brewing heiress Celeste Guinness and French model Melia Beaudoin.
Wafah Dufour, 44, is the daughter of bin Laden’s brother Yeslam. She was born in California and was living in New York during the 9/11 terrorist attacks orchestrated by her uncle, whom she has never met and strongly denounced.
Dufour spoke about the burden of being related to bin Laden in a 2005 interview with GQ, saying, “I was born in the States, and I want people to know I’m American. I want people here to understand that I’m like anyone in New York. For me, it’s home. It’s really tough that I have to always explain myself. It’s like every time I meet someone, I have to move a huge mountain that’s in front of me, and sometimes I get tired.”
“I wanted to disappear,” she added. “I was crying all day. I was saying, ‘How can I be me?’ For me it was an identity crisis, because I didn’t want to be related to something so awful. I’m like the victim, but I’m also part of what hits the target. And in my head, I know exactly where I stand, so it’s so tiring that I always have to explain myself, that I have nothing to do with anything.”
