In a post on his Neil Young Archives website, legendary Canadian songwriter Neil Young has revealed that his application for American citizenship has been delayed due to his admitted use of marijuana.

Young, who has retained his Canadian citizenship despite maintaining a residence in Redwood City, California for years, says he wants dual citizenship so he can vote against Donald Trump in the 2020 election. “When I recently applied for American citizenship, I passed the test,” he writes. “Recently however, I have been told that I must do another test, due to my use of marijuana and how some people who smoke it have exhibited a problem.”

As Young explains, thanks to a Policy Alert announced by former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, marijuana users are required to undergo a more rigorous citizenship application process. Despite marijuana being legal in much of the country, the policy states that using it still “continues to constitute a conditional bar to GMC [Good Moral Character] for naturalization eligibility, even where such activity is not a criminal offense under state law.”

“I sincerely hope I have exhibited good moral character and will be able to vote my conscience on Donald J. Trump and his fellow American candidates, (as yet un-named),” Young writes. “I will keep you posted, but I don’t think I will be able to remain parked during the proceedings.”
