In case you haven’t heard, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly are super weird. They are also engaged. This means that, in addition to allegedly celebrating their engagement by drinking each other’s blood, they had to seal their union with an appropriately non-traditional engagement ring steeped in several layers of symbolism. The result is a pear-shaped diamond and a pear-shaped emerald (MGK and Fox’s birthstones, respectively) positioned together on a band of white-gold “thorns” that, according to Machine Gun Kelly, is designed to hurt should his betrothed attempt to take the ring off.
MGK added this macabre little detail during a recent interview with Vogue, after first showing off the ring he had custom-designed for Fox on Instagram last week. “The concept is that the ring can come apart to make two rings. When it’s together, it’s held in place by a magnet. So you see how it snaps together? And then it forms an obscure heart,” Kelly told Vogue. “And you see this right here? The bands are actually thorns. So if she tries to take it off, it hurts.”
This seems, in a word, pretty fucked-up! According to Kelly, the message behind this finger trap of an engagement ring is, “Love is pain!” which still isn’t terribly encouraging. However, it certainly seems like the message behind an engagement ring of thorns designed to cause pain if taken off is, “I own you and will hurt you if you ever try to leave.” Romantic!
Last week, MGK gave a less alarming, if no less cringeworthy, description of the ring and its symbolism on Instagram.
“I know tradition is one ring, but i designed it with Stephen Webster to be two,” he wrote in a caption showing off the sparkler, while his fiancée was busy waxing poetic about banyan trees and blood drinking with her betrothed over on her own Instagram account. “The emerald (her birth stone) and the diamond (my birth stone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love,” Kelly explained in the caption. Still weird, but certainly less alarming than, “Also I want it to hurt if she tries to take it off.”
Look, I’m sure Machine Gun Kelly didn’t actually mean anything untoward or aggressive by the extremely untoward and aggressive comment he made about wanting his fiancée’s ring to hurt when removed. After all, these are two besotted weirdos who speak exclusively in the language of Twilight fan fiction. As long as Megan Fox likes her terrifying thorn ring, that’s all that matters. Still, yikes.
