How to Survive in Shark-Invested Waters for 28 Hours

While on a surfing trip in Indonesia, Brett Archibald experienced some really terrible luck: he fell overboard at night, and no one saw him go into the water. He thought it was all over, but he somehow managed to stay afloat and survive for more than 28 hours, despite sharks, seagulls, and jellyfish. In his new book, Alone: Lost Overboard in the Indian Ocean, the South African businessman discusses just how he is alive to tell the tale. It all started when he ate a poisoned calzone, and he woke up at 1:30 a.m. and started vomiting. He leaned over the railing and the next thing he knew, he was in the water. He got dive-bombed by seagulls, bumped by a shark (who was not-at-all interested in him) and stung by a Portuguese man-of-war. He also got nibbled at by tiny silver fish, which he said was “the most horrendous thing I’ve ever felt in my life.”
