Footage of the Beatles performing on Top of the Pops in the summer of 1966 was believed to be lost forever until collector David Chandler came forward with a series of 8mm reels.
Chandler recently handed over his treasure to Kaleidoscope, a company that specializes in restoring old video and TV shows, The Guardian reported. The 92 seconds of footage has since been enhanced and the sound eremastered to more clearly display the Fab Four playing “Paperback Writer,” which was released just months before this performance.
Only 11 seconds of the recording was known to exist before Chandler’s unveiling.
“Kaleidoscope thought finding 11 seconds of Paperback Writer was incredible, but to then be donated 92 seconds — and nine minutes of other 1966 Top of the Pops footage — was phenomenal,” Kaleidoscope’s chief executive, Chris Perry, said.
A screening of the video will be played Saturday at Birmingham City University.
Others featured in the other eight minutes of footage include Dusty Springfield singing “Goin’ Back,” The Hollies performing “Bus Stop,” Tom Jones singing “Green, Green Grass of Home” and performances from Ike and Tina Turner, the Shadows and the Troggs, according to The Guardian.
