Kate Upton is not kidding around—she can push a sled loaded with 500 pounds across the floor with no problem. Or she can do hip thrusts with a 200-pound bar across her lap.
The 25-year-old model and actress sat down with Shape to discuss her career, fitness regime, and personal life. She’s engaged to Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and is in a new movie, The Layover, in theaters now.
“I believe in hard work and learning your craft before going out there and doing it,” she said.
For her, exercise is about working hard in the gym in order to be healthy and feel confident about her body. She says that lifting heavy weights “leans you out if you do it the correct way” and she works with a trainer, Ben Bruno, to make sure she’s getting it right.
She focuses more on being strong than she does her weight. Once she started focusing on strength, she says she became the size she needed to be for modeling. If she wants to have a sumptuous dinner or a dessert, she’ll use it as a motivator to head to the gym that day. She also “likes to have a little ‘bad’ every day” whether it is chocolate or some chips. “Having a treat makes you feel like it’s worth it,” she claimed, and she also thinks that deprivation never works, so she curbs her hunger before it gets out of control.
