Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. announced on Thursday that his son, Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, who is known as A.G., will become publisher of The New York Times starting January 1. Just over a year ago, A.G. Sulzberger, 37, was named deputy publisher of The Times. The New York Times Company’s board approved the move during a meeting. The elder Mr. Sulzberger, 66, will stay on as chairman of the company. He has been the publisher since 1992 and through his tenure, The Time weathered the early days of digital transformation and an economic recession. In a note to employees, Mr. Sulzberger said, “this isn’t goodbye.” A.G. Sulzberger will be the sixth member of the Ochs-Sulzberger family to serve the publisher role. He calls himself “an unapologetic champion for this institution and its journalistic mission.”
