The Ivy League community of Dartmouth College was rocked on Friday night after experiencing an “active shooter” situation, where a 19-year-old was shot once near campus. Though the victim was not associated with the college, the school was locked down and students were told to temporarily shelter in place.
The victim was subsequently taken by police to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition as of Saturday morning.
Dartmouth College president Philip J. Hanlon sent an email message to the school’s community on Saturday, giving some details about the incident and the steps taken to ensure student and faculty safety.
“The campus community was ordered to shelter-in-place as soon as reports of gunshots were received by Dartmouth Safety and Security officials.” Hanlon wrote. “Students, faculty, and staff received a DartAlert notification by phone, text message, and email to shelter-in-place shortly after 10 p.m. and received updates thereafter. The shelter notification was lifted in consultation with police on Saturday at 12:46 a.m.
On Saturday afternoon, school officials updated the campus community that an arrest had been made. According to an email from Keiselim Montas, Dartmouth’s Interim Director of Safety and Security, Hanover, N.H. police apprehended Gage Young, just before 3 p.m. and are charging him with second-degree felony assault in connection with the shooting.
