Two mountain climbers are feared dead after setting out to climb “Killer Mountain” in Pakistan. Officials conducting the search say an avalanche risk is making the rescue mission more and more dangerous.
The mountain, known to climbers as the “Man Eater,” has an 8,000 meter peak and a 22% fatality rate, CBS News reports.
Tom Ballard from Scotland and Daniele Nardi from Italy set out on the climb over a week ago and have been missing since.
“Miracles do happen and have happened in the past in such incidents so we are hoping to find them,” an official said.
Bad weather has halted the search twice, but helicopters remained in the air even as Pakistan closed its airspace due to tension with India escalating.
News of the disappearance has hit Scotland especially hard as Ballard is the son of Alison Hargreaves, the first woman to climb Mount Everest alone, who died on her way down K2- the second highest mountain in the world behind Everest.
