Ashley Graham went full-blown Marilyn Monroe for New York‘s fall fashion issue. She posed wearing a blonde wig, white gloves, a negligee.
The plus-sized model is the cover photo, where she’s featured with red hair and lots of leopard print. Besides the sizzling photographs, the model discusses her lifelong mission to lift women up. Two years ago, Graham, now 29, became the first model to wear sizes like 14 and 16 and show off her curves on the cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
She was also the first model of her size to appear on the cover of Vogue in the magazine’s 125-year history. New York magazine calls her “the supermodel you can see yourself in” because she stands for something. She has attainable self-worth. She represents the slowly shifting cultural norms that come “not from fashion editors’ ideas about bodies but from real people’s.” Plus, she’s just plain hot.
More than two-thirds of American women are a size 14 or higher. Every time Graham speaks to the press, she tries to bring up other curvy models, like Pring, Lee, Julie Henderson.
“I’m getting a seat at the table we’ve never had before, and I’m also pulling up a couple of seats around me,” she said to New York magazine. “I know this isn’t about me. Just one girl is not going to change the world.”
