Tens years after Amanda Knox’s life was forever changed by a murder conviction that was ultimately overturned, she wants to return to the scene of the crime.
People Magazine reports that the 30-year-old is planning to return to Italy, where she was jailed for four years, in 2018.
“I’m not disappearing into oblivion,” Knox told People. “I have something to say.”
Knox’s notorious saga began as a foreign exchange studentin Perugia, Italy a decade ago, when she and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were accused of the murder of Knox’s 21-year-old British roommate, Meredith Kercher.
Found guilty of the grisly crime, Knox found herself in prison for four years before an appeal reversed Knox’s homicide conviction. In 2015, she was exonerated by Italy’s highest court.
After her release, she was the subject of the Emmy-nominated Netflix documentary Amanda Knox and she wrote a memoir.
Now she that she is out of the spotlight, she lives with her 35-year-old boyfriend Christopher Robinson in Seattle. She has devoted herself to a “new mission as an activist working to prevent wrongful convictions from happening to someone else.”
Knox said she used to have nightmares about being sent back to prison, but those are gone now.
She added that she can now look forward to normal people things, like her little sister’s wedding. She is grateful for the opportunity to find herself again outside of prison and feels grateful that she is able to look forward to building on her relationship and maybe some day a family of her own.
