Where to Take Her

Because every man needs a plan, and some of us need that plan with pretty pictures, we present Where to Take Her: a series that answers a gentleman’s most pressing lifestyle questions and recurs whenever we get around to it. This go-round: fall day trips.

Your Key:

Applewood Orchards and Winery – Warwick, NY – Ten apple varietals, a pumpkin patch, animals running about and a general store stockin’ beaucoup jams, jellies and the like. But most importantly: a winery. Most apple orchards lack this.

Blue Anchor at Spruce Street Harbor Park – Philadelphia, PA – Philly’s Spruce Street Harbor Park was deemed too awesome to close on Labor Day, so now you’ve got to the end of the month to hit up Blue Anchor, the floating pop-up resto dishing out solid burgers and cocktails with views of the Delaware River.

Kaaterskill Falls – Hunter, NY – Don’t let the relatively tame two-mile length fool you: this hike is a slow-burner. Steep ascents and hairpin turns pepper your course to the 260-foot, two-tiered money shot. Head to nearby Tannersville for a meal at the Deer Mountain Inn afterward. Dinner only. Rooms available if things get serious with the wine list.

Harvest-on-Hudson – Hastings-on-Hudson, NY – Fort Pond Bay Company’s flagship resto sits directly on the Hudson River, where they’re doling out gourmet locavore Italian with sunset Palisades views that’ll make you forget all about Blue Hill.

Museum of the City – UES – In other things too-cool/too-close, MOTC’s City as a Canvas graffiti retrospective proved so popular they’ve extended it through the 21st. The cops may not dig it, but you know, “_____ tha police” and all that.

Saratoga Hot Springs – Saratoga, NY – Saratoga’s got that fizzy H2O bubblin’ up from the earth, and at the Roosevelt Baths and Spa they’re mixing it with hot fresh water for maximum relaxation. The full slate of pampering treatments doesn’t hurt either.

Van Brunt Stillhouse – Red Hook – Tucked away down in Red Hook lies Van Brunt Stillhouse, named for one of the founding fathers of Breukelen and churning out small batches of whiskey, rum, grappa and moonshine. Have a tour, sample the wares, then give their bang-up cocktail recipes a whirl.
