Here’s to the burger: America’s sandwich.
And – Ray Kroc notwithstanding – there’s no question that SoCal is home to its greatest iterations.
On that list: Plan Check Kitchen + Bar, opening a new location on Fairfax today.
Simply put, Chef Ernesto Uchimura griddle-cooks edible masterpieces in beef-patty form.
He also fries potatoes and chicken in beef tallow (Mmm … Umami).
And whips up an off-menu delicacy called pastrami poutine (french fries soaked in rich gravy and covered in chunks of house-cured pastrami).
The recipes rotate daily (check their Facebook page day of for a sneak preview) and feature audacious toppings like kimchi mustard aioli, smoked bleu cheese and “pig candy” (bacon flash-fried, coated in brown sugar and then finished in the oven).
As for the bar: lots of oat sodas, plus cocktails designed by mixologist Matthew Biancaniello, who forages L.A. for wild arugula to make his agave and aloe-infused Splendor in a Glass.
Given its locale, the new iteration of Plan Check — a cozy gun-metal and dark wood storefront near The Grove — serves as an ideal burger and beer oasis during the area’s busy shopping times.
So relax. It’s time to eat.
