Five can’t-miss gallery shows in June

June 2, 2015 9:00 am

Gentledudes of Chicago: from gallery openings to closings, the low-brow to the high, there is a glut of good art rolling through town this month. Here are the five shows we’re most excited for. See them. Stroke your chin at them. Go forth and be more interesting at parties because of them.

Hard Heads, Sweet Knees, Forked Tongues

Arthur Paul’s most famous creation: an iconic bow-tied bunny. This exhibit spotlights the Chicago Bauhaus learner’s fine-art work post-Playboy, where he served as founding Art Director for 30 years and forever changed the way we look at magazines. Meaning design spreads and graphic layouts, of course. At the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. Opens Friday, June 5.

Memoirs of the Minimum Wage

Bronzeville native Hebru Brantley deals in bold colors and anime-inspired street-art stylings. The results have given ‘em worldwide fame, as well as pieces around the city you’ve surely come across. At Vertical Gallery. Opens Saturday, June 6.

Last Year On the Internet

Last Year On the Internet is a journey through the recesses of the World Wide Web with artists Chris Cloud and Lea Devon Sorrentino; their collection is a visual documentation of the past year online. Be very afraid. At Ordinary Projects. Opens Saturday, June 6.

From Hollywood to Chicago

Peter Sorel has had his eye on Hollywood for close to 50 years. This retrospective at new River North gallery Hilton-Asmus Contemporary presents a retrospective on his work, from his days on the set of Easy Rider all the way up to Life of PiAt Hilton-Asmus Contemporary. Open now.

Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity

If you haven’t checked out global arts curator Shantrelle Lewis’s exhibit at the MoCP, this month’s your last chance. Sartorial meditations on the black male identity as seen through photographs spanning three continents. The menswear inspiration alone is very much worth the visit. At the Museum of Contemporary Photography. Open now.

Bonus: Iron Heart Chicago

A week of worldly live music concerts at a dozen train stations across the city. From Chicago Blues guitarists to Irish fiddlers to Chinese violinists. Check the full schedule here
