In the fall of 2016, a group of armed men robbed Kim Kardashian West at gunpoint in Paris, stealing millions of dollars of jewelry in the process. An article published in Vanity Fair later that year offered more details on the case, including the phenomenon of thieves targeting the wealthy in their homes and using social media to track would-be victims.
Yunice Abbas, now 67, was one of the men who robbed Kardashian West. This week, his book about the robbery (written with Thierry Nieman) hit bookstores all across France. Titled J’ai séquestré Kim Kardashian — I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian — the book was published while Abbas is awaiting trial for his role in the theft.
France 24 offers more details about the book’s publication, and gives a sense of what to expect from it. In the article, Abbas describes having avoided illegal activity for nine years, until he was asked to take part in this robbery during a time when he needed the money.
“50 stories have already been told about all this,” Abbas said in an interview with AFP. “I wanted to tell my truth, the one I’ve lived.”
As the France 24 article notes, Abbas isn’t exactly denying his role in the robbery via the publication of this book. That could open up a number of ethical questions about the book’s publication — let’s not forget that this was a robbery in which Kardashian West was held at gunpoint and then tied up with plastic cables, which sounds like an absolutely horrifying experience.
Whether or not this book will see an English translation and an American release — one wonders if Son of Sam laws could be invoked in this case — remains to be seen.
